Faculty and Resident Awards, Honors, and Distinguished Presentations

We are proud to announce awards, honors, and distinguished presentations received/completed by our faculty and residents over the last six months. Please join us in congratulating them both for their accomplishments as well as all of the hard work that went into earning recognition!
Faculty:
Dr. Vinayak “Vinny” Nahar was a 2022 recipient of UMMC’s Trailblazer Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education. The Trailblazer Award recognizes the faculty’s time and effort to educate future physicians. Nominated by their peers, recipients of the award are recognized as effective teachers who engage, inspire, and mentor learners, demonstrate teaching innovations in curriculum design, and serve as a catalyst for enhancing teaching and learning.
Dr. Carlton “Ralph” Daniel, Professor, was the 2023 recipient of the Walter B. Shelley Leadership Award from the Women’s Dermatologic Society. The Walter B. Shelley, MD Leadership Award is presented periodically to a man who has made a significant contribution toward supporting women in dermatology.
In the Spring of 2023, Dr. William Black was promoted to the rank of professor. Dr. Black is a valued member of the UMMC Dermatology team who serves as our Mohs surgeon as well as the Mohs Fellowship Director.
Drs. Vinayak Nahar, Stephen Helms, Robert Brodell, and William Black of UMMC Dermatology were part of a research team that published “Forestalling Lidomageddon: Local Solutions to the Nationwide Shortage of Lidocaine” in SKIN The Journal of Cutaneous Medicine. Their article won third prize in the category of Most Read Articles of 2022 in SKIN The Journal of Cutaneous Medicine.
Residents:
UMMC Dermatology recently received Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accreditation for our residency program. We are proud to announce that the Review Committee commended the program for demostrating "substantial compliance with the ACGME's Program Requirements and/or Institutional Requirements without any new citations."
Dr. Sarah McClees was invited to participate in the Rising Dermatology Stars Competition for residents at the 2023 Winter Clinical Dermatology Conference in Miami, FL in February of 2023. Her presentation was titled, “The Value of a Rural Academic Faculty Practice: By the Numbers.”
Dr. Colleen Drapcho Powers was selected to present at the Winter Clinical Dermatology Meeting at the Fairmont Orchid in Hawaii in January of 2023. She provided a presentation titled, “Risk Factors for Postoperative Complications after Mohs Surgery in Older Medicare Beneficiaries.”
Dr. Laura Rezac won first prize in the oral presentation category at the Southern Dermatology Consortium Annual Meeting in February of 2023 in Jackson, MS. Her presentation was titled, "Patients with skin cancer prefer to participate in procedure cost discussions: a cross-sectional survey. " In addition, she was invited to present at the American College of Mohs Surgery’s annual meeting in Seattle, WA in May of 2023. Her presentation was titled, “Evaluation of Teledermatology Postoperative Follow-up Model after Mohs Micrographic Surgery.” Finally, Dr. Rezac was inducted into the AOA Honor Society in April of 2023.
